Job Summary:

As a key member of Southern Company Gas’s Retail Business Risk Management organization, the primary purpose of this position is to lead a team of professionals responsible for managing risk governance routines and control processes for ensuring that commercial businesses sales, supply procurement and hedging activities are performed in accordance with internal policies and governmental regulations. The position manages the analysis, identification, valuation and reporting of portfolio risks related to market, regulatory, and internal compliance. The position supports the maintenance and upgrade of the Energy Trading & Risk Management (ETRM) trade capture system, manages commodity pricing inputs and addresses internal/external audit inquiries.

Job Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Functional Responsibilities:

  • Ensures consistent application and leads validation efforts covering risk control, reporting, review and establishes associated policy requirements.

  • Identifies, measures, and oversees the reporting and communication of financial risks and daily changes/shifts in the portfolios, P&L via the preparation, analysis, review, and distribution of the Daily Position Report (DPR) and other ad-hoc reporting.

  • Responsible for position limit monitoring, stress testing, Value at Risk, mark-to-market valuations, and compliance with internal policies.

  • Monitors the daily market pricing feeds and validates completion and accuracy

  • Working collaboratively with the IT Department conduct testing and recommend improvements to the Energy Trading and Risk Management platform as well as supporting other technical-related processes.

  • Provides technical support and provides recommendations to the commercial organizations for modeling and mitigating the risk impacts of contemplated deal structures.

  • Monitors and provides recommendations covering risk control forms, policies, and procedures consistent with the requirements of internal departments, prescribed policy guidelines and external regulatory requirements.

  • Manages contract administration, transaction validation/confirmations, and access to trading and confirmation platforms to ensure the integrity, validity and accuracy of transactions captured, scheduled, and ultimately reported.

  • Analyzes complex problems, researches and organizes solutions and effectively presents recommendations via written and verbal presentations to varied levels within the organization.

  • Assesses and evaluates the design and validation of key Sarbanes Oxley, financial reporting internal control structures, recommending solutions to mitigate identified risks and changes in business processes.

  • Oversees verification of storage and imbalance positions and associated valuation, coordinating with the financial and physical trading, accounting organizations.

  • Ensures compliance with established risk management policies and procedures.

  • Ensures consistent form and content, and compliance with contract administration policies, procedures, and company standards.

  • Manages Dodd-Frank, SEC, and FERC reporting and compliance.

Engagement:

  • Works closely with Legal to identify possible policy, legal and/or regulatory prohibitions and ensure consistent application of controls.

  • Proactively works with Commercial Operations team.

  • Collaborates with the Accounting team to ensure reporting compliance.

  • Collaborates with internal team members to reconcile outstanding contract items and communicates resolution to Risk leadership, stakeholders, and senior leadership.

  • Active participation in transaction structuring and negotiation of terms.

  • Develops direct reports through effective and timely leadership, mentoring, motivation, and training.

  • Manages direct reports personal performance.

Qualifications

Education :

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, mathematics, business management, or related field

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of middle office experience in the energy and/or financial markets.

  • 2 years people management / leadership experience.

  • Understanding of utility operations and the wholesale and retail natural gas (or power) markets.

  • Experience with a wide range of commodity hedging strategies including physical and financial forwards, basis swaps and option strategies and knowledge of associated markets such as ICE, NYMEX, OTC, etc.

  • Experience with Energy Trading & Risk Management (ETRM) systems.

Skills & Knowledge:

  • MS Excel - advanced proficiency

  • MS Word & PowerPoint – intermediate proficiency

  • Understanding of risk system infrastructure including key processes and data flows

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills

  • Strong commercial awareness

  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize workflow

  • Ability to design/implement control practices

  • Ability to communicate and elevate issues concisely

  • Exemplary interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills

  • Excellent influencing, facilitation, and partnering skills

  • Must be able to interact with upper management and lead business-related discussions

  • Must be self-motivated and require minimal supervision

  • Ability to work independently, remotely, and productively with cross-functional teams.

Location:

Based in mid-town Atlanta, Georgia this position will involve office work and occasional to frequent telecommuting. The incumbent must be able to adapt, have self‐discipline and be comfortable working separately from their core team, which will require frequent phone, video, email and instant messaging interaction. Occasional travel may also be required.

Physical Demands:

The work environment is dynamic, fast-paced, and challenging with competing demands. Significant time may be spent working within an office cubicle doing work on desktop or laptop computer with significant keyboard/mouse time. The incumbent is frequently required to sit, use their hands, and communicate verbally and may occasionally have to lift or move up to 20 pounds.
