The incumbent will work a hybrid schedule of 2-3 days in the office per week and business needs may necessitate a change in schedule. The position is flexible to report out of our Atlanta, GA; Naperville, IL; Virginia Beach, VA; or Chattanooga, TN offices. Relocation may be considered depending on the situation.

Southern Company Gas is exploring the potential to integrate renewable gas into its strategy to reach net-zero direct methane emissions from our distribution operations and reduce indirect or customer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Advancing the integration as well as accounting for the environmental benefits of renewable gas is critical to our strategy. As such this position was created to lead efforts pertaining to management of renewable gas environmental attributes and commodities. This position will serve as a renewable gas commodity project manager within the renewable gas team.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate with all GAS departments (including commercial businesses), and other Southern Company entities as needed, to drive and implement the renewable gas strategy for Southern Company

  • Lead and manage carbon offset and renewable gas procurement efforts, including origination, analysis, RFPs, off-take agreement negotiation, and contract management, to support the Company’s voluntary customer programs and other initiatives

  • Support project development efforts by leading and overseeing pre-project and ongoing quantification, verification, and validation of carbon offsets, carbon intensity (CI), and life-cycle assessments (LCA) for the Company’s assets and potential renewable gas investments

  • Lead efforts to develop the framework and methodology for Southern Company Gas to leverage environmental attributes and commodities associated with renewable gas to reach the Company’s net-zero goals, including a system for measuring, documenting, and tracking renewable gas’ contribution toward these goals

  • Develop and maintain working knowledge of corporate GHG reporting standards, emission reduction quantification standards (e.g., carbon offset and project accounting protocols), and renewable gas certification standards

  • Support state and federal policy development and analysis for items potentially impacting renewable gas efforts

  • Engage with external stakeholders to influence reporting, quantification, and certification standards are aligned with the Company’s strategy

  • Obtain, integrate, and coordinate internal and external resources to ensure environmental attributes and commodities are procured and managed to meet objectives

  • Develop statement of work documents to secure and manage service providers and other resources that may be needed

  • Other duties as assigned

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree; technical discipline or technical job-related experience strongly preferred; or equivalent academic education and experience.

  • Strong analytical skills to effectively manage activities related to contracting, procurement, process management, policy/procedure/standards development, and monitoring and reporting

  • Demonstrated quantitative skills related to life cycle assessment and carbon intensity modeling, greenhouse gas emissions inventories, and carbon offsets

  • Experience creating, transferring, and otherwise managing and tracking environmental attributes for purposes of monetization and/or retirement

  • Strong relational, communication, and technical presentation/writing skills

  • Experience influencing and managing project teams without formal direct reporting relationships

  • Internet availability required; experience with Microsoft Office 365, specifically with demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint.

  • Ability to travel to project sites or to conferences is required; required travel is less than 10% of the time

  • Must be able to visit and inspect project sites, often outside in rough or uneven terrain

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, set priorities, work under pressure and follow through with assigned tasks

  • Ability to work as part of a team and act quickly with minimal supervision

  • Excellent organization skills including ability to effectively manage multiple priorities

  • Proven ability to manage and complete complex projects

  • Experience in clean energy, with experience in renewable gas a plus

  • Demonstrated understanding of environmental accounting and carbon markets

  • Proficiency in Microsoft excel – including modeling and analysis

  • Data-driven mindset with ability to influence internally and externally

  • Familiarity with regulated gas utility business models and operations preferred
