Description

The incumbent will work a hybrid schedule of 3 days in the office per week and business needs may necessitate a change in schedule.

Position Summary:

Southern Company Gas (SCG) is seeking an experienced Specialist, (Sr.) Environmental interested in environmental permitting of natural gas infrastructure projects in the Southeast US; mostly in Georgia and Tennessee. This position will assist with SCG’s Southern Operations including Atlanta Gas Light and Chattanooga Gas Company business units. The applicant should have relevant environmental field survey, project siting, utility routing, and permitting experience, with the ability to lead and participate in a cross-functional team environment. The position provides the opportunity to use your environmental knowledge and skills to support complex projects, acquire permits, complete risk assessments, conduct due diligence, and advise multidisciplinary teams on environmental risk and permitting strategies.

Primary responsibilities include working closely with engineering/design teams, construction operations, environmental peers, construction contractors, and external consultants to help obtain and maintain compliance with all required federal, state, and local environmental licenses, permits, and approvals for construction and subsequent operation of the proposed facilities.

The candidate should demonstrate proficient knowledge and experience with biological field survey protocols, cultural resource studies, federal, state, and local permitting, risk assessments, due diligence, and agency coordination. Applicants with experience permitting projects with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Section 404 permits), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, Georgia Department of Natural Resources, and Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation would be preferred.

Job Functions, Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Environmental siting, licensing, permitting, due diligence, and outreach support

  • Identification, management, and mitigation of environmental risk

  • Creative thinker with ability to recommend innovative solutions to environmental challenges

  • Experience with project planning, budget, and schedule management

  • Negotiations with federal, state, and local environmental regulatory agencies

  • Oversight of environmental field studies and consultants, including development/ management of vendor contracts / purchase orders /invoices; ensure sourcing processes comply with corporate procurement and financial policies

  • Effective and timely communications with internal and external stakeholders

  • Ability to support multiple projects with multifaceted environmental and regulatory issues and assist in resolving complex environmental matters

  • Maintain current knowledge of, and ensure compliance with, pertinent federal, state, and local environmental policies and regulations as well as company policies

  • Translate regulations and permits into actionable tasks

  • Provide guidance on alternatives to minimize environmental impacts

  • Review, monitor, comment on, and effectively communicate business implications of emerging environmental legislation and regulations

  • Independent decision-making in a fast-pace environment, with minimal oversight

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Requirements::

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Geology, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred)

  • 4 years of directly relevant experience

  • Valid drivers license

  • Knowledge of environmental permitting and regulations

  • Oral and written communication skills as well as analysis, problem solving, compliance, leadership, and process efficiency skills

  • Knowledge and experience with construction storm water regulations and erosion control practices

  • Experience with wetland and stream determination and delineation surveys

Working Conditions

  • This position will be in an office and field environment. Project field visits are required during all types of weather (hot, cold, wet).
