Southern Company Plant Operator in Beaumont, Texas
This position is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable and cost effective operation of Storage and Peaking Ops facility assets on a daily basis. The Plant Operator must ensure that facilities are operated to meet system requirements and/or contractual requirements of customers and ensuring that the facilities are operated within design limits and in accordance with established procedures.
Job Responsibilities & Accountabilities by Competency
Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all equipment and facilities needed to meet daily system and commercial needs.
Communicates regularly with Commercial, Gas Control, Gas Supply, other operating facilities, and/or interconnecting pipeline(s) to ensure that all requests are within the design capabilities of the facilities.
Properly, legibly, and accurately records all equipment and facility operations, and prepares required reports completely and accurately.
Comply with Company policies and procedures as well as applicable State and Federal safety and environmental regulations.
Performs scheduled compliance and/or maintenance work orders and facility upkeep.
Promotes good relations with all customers (i.e., commercial, gas control, gas supply, other operating facilities, interconnecting pipelines, management, etc.) and cooperates with other personnel and/or departments.
Responds appropriately to abnormal operating conditions in order to maintain a safe and reliable operating environment.
Appropriately responds to Emergency Response situations and implements first responder duties in accordance with the Emergency Response manuals.
Responsible for understanding and support of corporate and department objectives and goals.
Monitor facility security and access control, and supervisory control (HMI) systems, respond to system changes, alarms, abnormal operating conditions, etc. in an efficient and professional manner.
Strives to promote continuous improvement pertaining to safe, efficient, and reliable operation of facilities.
Identify and report operational issues that may impact facility reliability or efficiency.
Identify and report operational issues that may impact compliance with regulations or company policies and procedures.
Collaborate with management and peers, internal groups, consultants and contractors to assist with improving existing operations, special projects, new construction, and expansion of existing facilities.
At the beginning and end of assigned shift, participate in established shift change procedure to discuss all current orders, difficulties encountered, and known unusual conditions in the performance of facility equipment.
Participates in Company sponsored technical training programs, cross-training assignments, job shadowing, and orientation of new hires to improve knowledge and skills of self and others.
Works with peers to continually improve system efficiency and reliability.
Strives to continually operate facilities in an efficient and reliable manner by utilizing knowledge of facilities, peer knowledge/expertise, new technology, best practices, and/or tools available to maximize system efficiency and reliability.
High School Graduate or GED
Valid state driver’s license
- Associates degree in technical, process, or plant operator specialties
Related Work Experience:
3 years gas operations and/or process experience
Knowledge of the principles internal combustion engines, and gas processing equipment
- Knowledge and experience in safe handling practices of flammable gases or liquids, and high pressure systems.
Specific Skills & Knowledge:
Must be able to pass DOT Operator Qualification requirements for specific covered tasks.
Ability to prepare written and electronic reports in a clear and concise manner.
Proficient understanding and use of the English language.
Basic knowledge of gas handling/processing equipment.
Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and diagrams.
Knowledge of pipeline, compression, process, LNG, LP, and/or storage field operations.
Good computer skills (i.e., Word, Excel, MS Outlook, etc.).
Ability to interact effectively with others
Motivated, with good communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
The incumbent works in a control room environment.
Shift schedules may vary according to facility operational requirements
Lift and carry medium to heavy weight items.
Reach overhead for items, stoop, bend, and twist while working.
Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 50 pounds of force frequently.
Other physical activities include crouching, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions.
Visual acuity requirements include color, depth perception and field of vision necessary to operate a computer.
Travel requirements should be infrequent (0 – 5%).
