Southern Company Measurement Supervisor in Glen Ellyn, Illinois

Measurement Supervisor


The purpose of this position is to supervise measurement personnel engaged in the operation, maintenance, installation, and calibration of gas measurement and gas quality equipment. Responsible for the scheduling routing and executing of compliance activities associated with measurement equipment and devices at large industrial customers sites and gas storage facilities. Ensures all compliance and calibration paperwork is completed and filed as required. Position is also responsible for providing a quality assurance process over measurement activities of pipeline suppliers at custody transfer points. Position is the frontline enforcement of departmental adherence to Company safety, operational, emergency, and environmental guidelines and procedures. Apply budgetary goals at the field level. Additional responsibilities include the review of meter station design prints, issuing of purchase orders, monitoring of parts inventory, and resolving billing discrepancies with customers and suppliers related to measurement


Functional Expertise:

  • Understand all aspects of turbine, rotary, coriolis, multi-path ultrasonic, orifice and associated ancillary and tertiary devices used in the metering of natural gas.

  • Understand characteristics of both mechanical and electronic gas metering Correctors (pressure, temperature, etc.) and associated equipment used in volume corrections.

  • Understand regulatory compliance requirements for gas metering equipment

  • Understand features of AMR devices used with large meters and all aspects of installation and maintenance of such devices.

  • Understands the processes and procedures required to design, install, and maintain large meter sets.

Business Acumen:

  • Assist in formulating appropriate tactical direction for all aspects of field measurement strategies for Company.

  • Organize and communicate daily work assignments and regional requirements.

  • Set daily work schedules and routing to ensure the most efficient and economical dispatch of personnel.

  • Maintains parts inventory used for meter calibrations and maintenance activates.

  • Propose tactical direction of compliance related tasks to ensure annual goals are met.


  • Provide supervision and guidance to field measurement personnel to ensure daily workloads are completed and departmental goals are achieved.

  • Provide support to regional management staff in executing compliance programs related to measurement.

  • Collaborate and engage numerous internal departments to meet company goals and build cohesive relationships.

  • Communicates effectively with management to meet all regulatory requirements and employment laws.

  • Instruct, develop, and engage all measurement personnel to ensure a well-trained, motivated staff.

  • Execute Company safety guidelines to ensure a safe and productive workplace.

  • Execute departmental metrics to achieve stated goals.

  • Ensure service level agreements with other departments are achieved.

  • Ensure all regulatory requirements are met including procedures in the Company’s Operations, Construction, Emergency, and Environmental Procedures Manuals.

  • Assist the Director Measurement in meeting or exceeding all financial, performance and regulatory metrics


Education Requirements:


  • BA/BS degree or 3-6 yrs. experience in natural gas utility operations.


  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering; or equivalent.

  • Possesses progressive industry experience in gas measurement, and training or qualification from manufacturers and third-party measurement training organizations.

Experience Requirements:


  • 2 years experience supervising field employees.


  • 3 years’ experience working in natural gas measurement.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:


  • Demonstrated ability to supervise people.

Behavioral Attributes:

  • Some travel required, working in the field, as well as an office environment.
