Gas Scheduler



The purpose of this position is to own and be responsible for the Utility’s gas scheduling activities and reporting. Must be expert in scheduling gas accurately and timely on multiple interstate pipelines and various supply basins. Requires technical knowledge to direct gas on long-haul transport, while utilizing least cost routes and generating pipeline transport cost credits. Must be proactive in solving nomination imbalances and ensure that the company experiences no overrun penalties. Communicates frequently with pipeline representatives, gas suppliers, Gas Control, and Gas Transportation Departments to ensure accurate nominations and confirmations of gas deliveries.

Job Responsibilities & Accountabilities by Competency

Functional Expertise:

  • Performs gas nomination activities within NAESB and FERC guidelines.

  • Nominates gas on interstate pipelines, the company’s nomination system, and gas management system.

  • Understands pipeline tariffs, operating practices and contractual provisions.

  • Observe pipeline transport value to market company’s temporary available transport for capacity releases.

  • Prepares and distributes monthly and daily reports.

Business Acumen:

  • Ability to prioritize daily work and handle multiple tasks.

  • Learns company’s pipeline contracts and tariff to schedule nominations and to operate under strict daily internal and external deadlines.

  • Exercises decision making and analytical authority to determine the best, most cost-effective transport route while ensuring no overrun penalties.

  • Resolves problems relating to nomination mis-matches and imbalances.

  • Formulates and recommend pipeline capacity utilization plan to capture optimal value.

  • Monitors capacity utilization to ensure compliance to pipeline tariffs and contractual provisions.


  • Contacts gas producers and buyers to ascertain their requirements (e.g., contract numbers).

  • Communicates changes with Traders and Schedulers (e.g., rate, tariff, fuel, and operational conditions).

  • Manages relationship with pipeline representatives to ensure proper communication of Nomination mis-matches.

  • Assists with department technical support and special projects.

Driving Results:

  • Ensures that all nomination activities are accounted for accurately in the financial records for proper recording and payments.

  • Responsible for making executable decisions that adhere to regulations, tariff and internal requirements.

  • Monitors transport value to determine and capture the highest possible capacity release value.

  • Monitors and communicates pipeline postings that may affect capacity utilization or otherwise impact system operations.

  • Works with Information Technology & Systems (IT&S) to test, implement, and troubleshoot new systems as Scheduling Subject Matter Experts.

  • Executes alternative capacity utilization plans when necessary to manage pipeline or utility outages, curtailments, or operational orders.

  • Create action plans that fill gaps in processes where adjustments need to be made.


Education, Certifications/Licenses:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or other technical disciplines.

  • At least one year of work experience, internship and co-op work are acceptable.


  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Engineering.

Related Work Experience:


  • Ability to prioritize daily work and handle multiple tasks.

  • Resolves problems relating to nomination mis-matches and imbalances.

  • Proficient in PC applications including Excel, Word, Outlook, Access, and Internet Explorer.


  • Natural gas scheduling experience or comparable experience

  • Gas Industry Experience.

  • Strong operational knowledge of pipeline, LDC operations and industry standard practices.

Specific Skills & Knowledge:


  • Strong analytical, good negotiation, communications, and attention to details skills

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Excel and Access.

  • A basic knowledge in financial or accounting principles.

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work in a team environment.


  • Ability to develop and sustain strong working relationships across various groups both inside and outside of company.

  • Capable of leading independent projects and teams as required.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Self-starter with the ability to work effectively with minimum supervision in a fast paced, multi-tasking, team environment.

  • Incumbent works in an office environment

  • This position requires evening, weekend and holiday work. Required to be on-call to monitor and maintain system integrity.

  • Position requires individual be prepared for and attend a 7:30 a.m., CST, daily planning meeting.
